As opposed to its predecessors, the Programme foresees a list of specific objectives, including develop flood prevention measures, guarantee drinking water supply and promote the resiliency of cities.|

Three years later, the government launched the very first climate agenda with detailed guidelines, a very important stepping stone of the national adaptation roadmap, ultimately leading to the 2016 NAS – National Climate Adaptation Strategy, the key tool addressing society in its entirety and stating that every single person is able to “protect the Netherlands from heatwaves, drought, floods and all other natural disasters”.
CONTINUE By means of four-dimensional diagrams (envisaging ‘Hotter’, ‘Wetter’, ‘Drier’ and ‘Rising Sea Level’ conditions), the NAS shows the effects of climate change on these nine critical sectors: management of water and lands, nature, agriculture, horticulture and fisheries, public health and assistance, tourism, infrastructures (roads, railways, ports and airports), energy, telecommunication and public security.

Through its clear and straightforward message, it is undeniable that the NAS calls upon actions from every single citizen, thus building on the consensus and knowledge of the Dutch people, rather than merely and blindly imposing a political agenda.
CONTINUE Adaptation to climate change has thus been explained to kids and adults, at workplace, school or public manifestations. Lastly in 2018 the government has issues the NAS Implementation Programme, a set of measures that will allow Netherlands, a country that always struggled to stay afloat, to become a virtuous example to all other countries in the world.
